Meet Shauna…Shauna is a high school senior often described as a “go-to” for inspiration and a friendly ear.
Her family is her rock… She is surrounded by a close-knit family of hardworking parents and her three younger siblings. While her parents didn’t complete high school, they instilled education and hard work as core values in the family.
Love of learning…Shauna loves to learn from others. She’s an avid reader of autobiographies, inspired by powerful stories and voices of Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris.
Working hard…She balances school work with a part-time job two evenings a week and with after-school care of her siblings.
Connected to the community…Her peers voted her most likely to lead her community to positive outcomes.
Meet Jamal…Jamal is regarded as a natural leader by his classmates and is well liked for being empathetic. It isn’t unusual to see him in deep discussions during lunch or before school.
His Strengths… He is a great presenter and communicator, and he is usually the source of creative ideas in class. In fact, he is the founding member of the ‘Entrepreneurs Club’ at school.
Growing up… Jamal lives with his mother. She has a medical condition which has her in and out of doctor’s offices. She is often out of work and their government support ensures that they have a place to live.
Already at work…Jamal works weekends at McDonald's, and has been “Employee of the Month” three times in the last year.
Aspires to big things…He want to attend a community college or find full time work; attending college would be a first for his family and he is excited by that possibility. But he is also realistic about what he can afford & wants to support his mother and her health. School may have to wait and he is deciding what path to take.
Meet Paulina… Paulina repeated her sophomore year before entering the JAG NJ program.
Her story…She's lived with her grandparents since starting high school. To her, family means grandparents, aunts, cousins, and friends.
Her Passion…Paulina loves building intricate Lego structures. She has patience to follow designs and create her own designs of buildings and bridges. She keeps track of her creations and tech advancements in a journal she carries.
Her Strengths…Paulina is quiet in class; but when she speaks about technology, she gets very excited. She excels at math & science. She is detail oriented and always on time with her assignments.
Her future is bright… Her GPA has been increasing steadily. She is now thinking about her future and is reading about roles in Engineering. She knows her grandparents don’t have the money to send her to college, so she is considering working for a few years to save enough money to pursue her dreams.
